Natural alternatives to Retinol

There are a few ingredients which have revolutionised the skincare industry including retinol. Retinol is found in many different beauty and skincare products. It can make your skin look and feel softer, smoother, and have a radiant glow and is lauded as an anti-ageing treatment that helps to decrease fine lines and wrinkles while improving collagen production.

What is retinol?

Retinol is a synthetic derivative of Vitamin-A but falls under a broader category of retinoids. When applied topically it converts into retinoic acid through specialised enzymes that are found within the skin.

It was first approved in the 1970s, mainly for use by people with acne as it helps promote cell turnover and prevents the clogging of pores. This ultimately helps prevent blemishes. It also improves the way other skincare products penetrate the skin.

Benefits of Retinol

There are many benefits to retinol, but here are a few of the main reasons it is such a popular skincare ingredient:

#1 Promotes clear skin

By unclogging pores, retinol clears skin and prevents further outbreaks from occurring, which ultimately leads to less scarring.

#2 Fight Signs Of Ageing

Retinoids reduce fine lines and wrinkles by increasing the production of collagen. They also stimulate the production of new blood vessels in the skin, which improves skin colour. Additional benefits include fading age spots and softening rough patches of skin.

#3 Helps Even Skin Tone

Retinol is also recognised for its ability to stimulate skin cell turnover, which is manifests as a sort of "exfoliating" effect. Dull and dry skin makes way for new, brighter, and more even-toned skin, with increased levels of collagen and elastin. The thicker skin is stronger and smoother and has fewer overall imperfections.

Not for everyone…

However, despite Retinol being deemed safe for use, it does have well-known side effects such as irritability and redness, making it difficult for those with inherently sensitive skins to use.

There are several alternatives to retinols have been developed that claim to be “natural,” and promise the same results as retinoids without the side effects, however these often fall short of their promises both in terms of effectiveness and being less reactive.

Chemyunion has developed Revinage®, an exclusive bio-retinol of plant origin that can successfully replace retinol and its derivatives in the treatment of aged and photoaged skin with many advantages, such as high stability and absence of side effects.

Revinage® has been proven to visibly reduces wrinkles and expression lines and evens the skin tone. It also restores chapped lips.
